Western Balkan countries should do more to fight the corruption

Brussels—“Western Balkan countries should do more to fight the corruption”,- was said during the hearings of the Subcommittee on Human Rights - in the European Parliament on Wednesday, November 5th 2014.

European Parliament can contribute to improve the information on the situation of these countries and also will going to be focused on Human Rights, rule of law and the starting of the legislative frameworks and access to justice,” - said the Chair of the hearing of Human Rights.





It was discussed also about many other problems in Western Balkan countries as threats to journalists, so there is no freedom of expression in media, violence against women, children, LGBTI persons, children access to justice, political development, minority problems.

“Corruption is problem in all the Western Balkan countries and the fight against the corruption is an essential one and it has to be one also in this connection with human rights. The other issues about the Human Rights, there are some progress of Serbian minority in Kosovo but as in many Balkan countries situation with Roma minority still remains a problem and also disable persons. After war we had, we still need improvement “,-stated vice chair of parliamentary delegation for the relation with Bosnia-Herzegovina and Kosovo.

“In regards to the Western Balkan countries there are the most important issues on the table, as I consider freedom of expression and favor of the media environment. Threats to journalists can not be tolerated and government must investigate these threats. Protection of minorities – all minorities needs to enjoy all equal rights” stated Mr. Kukan, chairman of the delegation of the parliamentary committee for stabilization and association with Serbia.

“I wanted to raise in particular one area where I think we need to see much more work and that is protection of the rights of the women, children, LGBTI persons and the disabled. We are still seeing far amount of homophobia, discrimination and hate crimes including violence on the basis sexual agenda orientation”, -said Mr.Simon Moulder-director of Strategic Enlargement.
